What is Census?

Census is an enterprise-grade Data Activation and Reverse ETL platform. It is engineered specifically to extract heavily refined, highly trustworthy analytical data from central cloud data warehouses (like Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift) and synchronize that data directly into frontline operational tools (like Salesforce, Zendesk, Intercom, and Marketo).

Census simply attaches to the warehouse, reads the pristine, mathematically verified models, and syncs them directly to the marketing platforms. The CDP becomes entirely “composable,” leveraging the massive compute power and single source of truth of the existing data stack.

Incremental Syncs and State Tracking

Census optimizes API interactions by utilizing strict incremental syncing. When a sync is configured, Census takes a snapshot of the query result. On the next execution, it mathematically compares the new query result against the snapshot. It identifies precisely which records were added, updated, or removed, and generates specific API payloads strictly for the delta. This micro-batching drastically reduces network overhead and prevents the platform from overwhelming downstream APIs with unnecessary data.

Deep Destination Integrations

Unlike basic integration tools that simply drop JSON payloads, Census understands the deeply specific object models of the destination systems. If a data team is syncing data to Salesforce, Census understands the complex, hierarchical relationships between Salesforce Accounts, Contacts, and Opportunities. An engineer can configure Census to look up an existing Salesforce Contact by their email address, update their specific Churn_Risk_Score custom field, and simultaneously relate that Contact to a specific Account object, executing complex relational updates natively over the API.

Observability and Alerting

Because Reverse ETL pipelines feed data directly into live, customer-facing marketing and sales systems, data quality is paramount. If a pipeline pushes corrupted data to an email marketing platform, the company might accidentally email a massive discount code to the wrong customer segment.

Census provides native pipeline observability. It tracks the exact status of every API call, automatically handling HTTP 429 Rate Limit Exceeded errors with intelligent exponential backoff. If a destination API experiences a massive catastrophic outage, or if a sync suddenly rejects thousands of records due to a data type mismatch, Census halts the pipeline and instantly alerts the data engineering team via Slack or PagerDuty, preventing the corrupted data flow.
